Photobiomodulation (PBM), also called red light therapy, uses specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light to interact with the body's cells. It is delivered with LED panels, beds or flexible blankets and is used in recovery, skin and wellness programmes.
The wavelengths
Red light sits around 630 to 660 nm; near infrared around 810 to 940 nm and reaches deeper into tissue. Commercial devices combine several wavelengths. The Alteon HEALRAY range, for example, uses 633, 660, 850 and 940 nm on the Red Revive beds and adds 810 nm on the Red Lumen beds.
Beds, panels and blankets
- Full body beds treat the whole body at once; the Red Lumen Pro uses 32,000 LEDs at 4200 W.
- Standing beds and panels take less floor space.
- Blankets wrap the body on an ordinary treatment bed and plug into a standard 220 V point.
Where it is used
Recovery centres, gyms, dermatology and aesthetic clinics, physiotherapy practices and hotels use PBM, often alongside cryotherapy, saunas and hyperbaric oxygen. It is not a substitute for medical advice.
